The new album 'Into the Woods' is available!

Released by Navis Classics.

For this project, we selected a varied and attractive repertoire of surprising and accessible wind quintet music.

On the playlist you will find classic numbers by Samuel Barber, Robert Muczynski en Malcolm Arnold, but also beautiful transcriptions from symphonic compositions by Leonard Bernstein en George Gershwin.

We found exciting cross-overs between English style and American spiritual music, jazz and artmusic.

‘Into the Woods’ is an album in which we search for all possibilities for wind quintet.

This recording was made possible with the support of the Government of Flanders and Kunstcirkel.

The CD Kicking Sawdust is the first of the woodwind quintet Ensemble Houthandel BE. This fairly new ensemble of the wind section blows a fresh wind through the world of classical music. With their Great Houthandel Antwerpen Show the quintet got the ‘Jeugd en Muziek Prijs’ of Goldens Wings in 2009. And now there is this debut CD.

In circus terms Kicking Sawdust stands for the ‘kick-off’ in the arena, the ‘baptism of fire’. With this CD the members of Houthandel take a next, daring step in their professional development. Yes, the circus is the thread in this debut CD. With Kicking Sawdust these young musicians knock you off your feet. It seems an impossible equilibrium exercise. How do you create by means of a studio recording an intimate, entertaining atmosphere? How can you minimise the distance between the listener and the players by means of a CD? Just try, Houthandel must have thought. Have they succeeded? Judge for yourself.  After the kick of Kicking Sawdust.
